The property is located on a promontory point of the Gordon River in Port Royal with a view across to a mangrove preserve and Keywayden Island. The site is unique to this part of the city because of its 2.5 acre size which allowed the building to be located closer to the water and achieve 270 degree views.
The Clients, having extensively traveled through Spain and South America, were interested in latin modern architecture. Observing first hand the buildings of Riccardo Leggoretta and Louis Barragan, they were intrigued by the serenity and simple beauty of the spaces they created. They were also interested in a house that functioned well and could efficiently accommodate staff, family and guests...a south american attitude for living fit well with their own lifestyles. With this in mind, the primarily idea became one of a "Modern Hacienda". Historically this type of building is organized by one or a series of courtyards. Each courtyard, in this particular case there are three, has a specific function and sequence; Beginning with the service court, outside the main wall, leading into the main motorcourt and subsequently into the more private forecourt where everyday functions of the residence are centrally disposed.
These courts were developed to collect and connect the programmatic pieces or "buildings" of the house which in turn create residual spaces. These spaces are taken advantage of throughout the home in a variety of ways; actual living areas, stone fountains or as a device to focus views out to the water and landscape. This idea strengthened the visual and physical connection of the structure to the surrounding site in all directions. It is these design attitudes, as well as the attention given to the lifestyle of the clients, that recall the serenity and beauty of a modern latin environment and lifestyle.
